Figure has been one of the most difficult games for me to write a review for. I feel like I put a lot of pressure on myself to say something meaningful. So many of my friends view this game in extremely high regard and their love for this game and many of them have articulated their love for it so beautifully that it feels like I can't really say anything fresh, but then again, sharing my thoughts will bring out something if I dig deep enough, so I'm ready to try.

My opinion on Figure over the years has only gone up. When I first saw Stonk playtesting the game on stream, I thought it seemed like an average side project for Wonderful between the 2nd and 3rd Kermit games. I thought the out of order floor numbers was a kind of pointless gimmick, and my overall impressions amounted to an okay time and surface level experience.

Figure from my perspective has grown to have been appreciated more and more with time from both the average player and average maker. There isn't really anything to back up this perspective. It just feels like something that slowly gathered more appreciation as people took the time to go through Wonderful's catalogue.

So now I had to wonder if my first impressions on Figure were wrong, and when it finally came time for me to experience it, I was cautiously optimistic. I had just cleared a couple of the FSR Legend games: RNG Dungeon and End Your Life, two games with a far heavier focus on bosses. Figure with its heavier emphasis on needle acted as a nice comfortable break for me between pushing myself to my limits.

Figure is a very utilitarian fangame. What I mean by that is that it only puts as much effort into its visuals as it needs to, and it only uses the simplest spike formations it can to force certain jumps. It causes Figure to feel incredibly stripped back, which ironically makes the game as a whole work much better.

I personally believe the main theme of Figure to be depression/emotional numbness, or at least that's the vibe it hits for me. Floor games are a game in which you tend to understand their length. If you're at floor 33, you know roughly how far you are through the game in most instances. It's a sense of grounding. Figure's choice to be subversive here serves multiple purposes then. The obvious, most surface level reason, is to just be a bit cheeky and silly, which I respect as a valid reason. The second, deeper meaning I personally felt from it is that it makes the player feel lost, like they're in a liminal state. Not knowing where you are, combined with the simple visuals and platforming, sort of prevents the player from ever fully feeling at home or cozy. It's quite genius.

The choice to simplify the visuals makes it hit more when it feels like something pokes through that sort of numbness. The Boys screen is an outlandish almost immersion breaking moment. It's so silly and shows a lot of Wonderful's making personality, and yet once you're done with it, its back to the muted visuals and colors without any sort of recognizable thing outside of default engine fangame assets.

I think it ultimately just makes the experience more interesting to me, and it compliments the platforming, which I think has aged remarkably well given the time it came out. It's simple and once again quite utilitarian, but the overall quality of it consistently shocked me. I think it just works so well as a whole. Very fun needle.

My only sort of definitive negative against the game is the jungle area boss, nicknamed affectionately as Poland. It's a short and simple boss that just feels very luck based and it pretty greatly detracted from my experience. It's a shame too because my enjoyment and appreciation for this game was hit pretty hard by this thing right at the end.

I'm dealing with some very bad fatigue so I'll stop writing my review here. I think I said what I wanted to say. Figure is an excellent game. Go play it.

If you like Kermit series and goes in expecting some similar stuff, you will be probably discouraged. Figure is very hefty needle-oriented game in not the same vein as beloved Kermits. Needle is way more strict and way more about precise jumps instead of exploration of funny gimmicks in general. Some gimmicks will be there, but not that many, and even when they are, frame-perfects are not sleeping and will be there as well very often

Not that i'm hater of frame-perfects, and tbh this is not exact term that i mean to use. What i'm saying about is this game has some really nasty jumps and sometimes entirely gross saves. Sometimes in generic way, sometimes in frame-perfect way, but i think you will always spot this shit when you see it. Mines stage in 3X hub is pure example of what i'm talking about. It's not constantly bad, but i think maker just put them way too much and in very unpleasant ways in this game. Kermit 3 has some stuff like this, but Kermit 3 is heaven in that comparison

Some needle tho was actually very fun and based. Pretty much everything up to 3X hub was fine, with highlight being infamous Boys screens, space visuals screens, one room that got changing many times and i also liked iconic things like moving water save and floor 22 - it was actually probably my favourite hard needle in the game. 3X hub has also pretty fun stuff like refresher stage or stage with a lot of platform cycles. Didn't find final stage fun tho, because main gimmick felt like filler and it was just mostly hard usual needle without very interesting stuff (and with many "frame-perfects")

Bosses were actual bangers. They are rare and mostly located in 3X hub, but they were quite awesome for most part. Final avoidance was chill and enjoyable as well

Overall, it was decent experience and i had mostly good time, despite all bad things. If you interesting in hard gimmick games there are better picks as well as hard usual needle games, but it was still fun. If you are just in general hunting for hard needle it might be your halt

I am not quite sure exactly where I stand on Figure at the end of the day. There are some certainties about it, however, that I can henceforth list:

Difficulty - This is one hell of a game in this respect, being damn near insurmountable to me at times. Once I got going, however, momentum more or less carried me to the end. There are a couple of standout saves, but for the most part I found the game to be fairly consistent in difficulty with a few smaller spikes and dips here and there - a quality which I find to be to the game's benefit. Variety in difficulty is never a bad thing, and I quite enjoy never knowing whether or not the save coming up will be a mountain or an anthill.

Originality - Something to be found in spades here is the utterly unique style and aesthetic that wonderful is so well known for at this point. With that said, I find Figure to be a rather different shade of her typical fare as compared to the Kermit trilogy, a shade that I don't necessarily prefer, but is by no means inferior, merely different. This is thanks to the especially simplistic visuals and general lack of particularly vibrant gimmicks.

These two facets of Figure are easy to describe, but what I find most difficult to write out is just how the overall package makes me feel. Figure is rather peculiar to me, in that sense. I have been left speechless by a game before, but that's more often due to my overwhelming emotional connection to them, and after a while I'm able to figure out how to put my love for those games into words. With Figure, however, I am left with feelings that I suppose I've just never experienced before. That, I think, is the true wonder of Figure. For a creator that is well known for truly odd-ball experiences, she has really outdone herself with this one.

All the game is a fog of confusion with a total lack of cohesion. For how much content there was, I didn't really ever know when it was going to end until I found myself at the final avoidance. With most other games, there is a sense of progression and a flow to the overall design, but here that progression and flow feels nebulous, like this journey is without direction. This, I imagine, is sort of what it could feel like to float through space aimlessly, not knowing which star or planet you could find yourself in proximity to from one day to another - at least, if you had an eternity to do so, seeing as most of your time floating would be in emptiness. Nonetheless, that is more or less how I can express Figure to myself. It is a totally unpredictable game that I could never get a read on even by the end.

My only issue with the game is that it does not resonate with me as much as, for example, Kermit 3 does, but then it obviously isn't supposed to. Figure takes a different artistic approach, one that does not mimic any other that I've ever seen, and that it is not one which I am totally in love with is through no fault of its own. Perhaps, however, I could come to completely adore Figure with time. Even now, I already feel myself wanting to go through it all over again. So maybe this review will be different come tomorrow, or maybe it will never change. The only thing I can say with certainty is that Figure is a game well worth playing if you have the skill and dedication to try it out.
