This one feels like it’s in a similar category for me — a fangame with that classic vibe where you can tell a lot of love went into it. Nice adventure feel, good variety, and overall it’s just a game I enjoy coming back to.
And yes: you can actually play DOOM in it — that was hilarious.

I Wanna Run the Marathon was also one of the first fangames I ever played, so I definitely got my teeth kicked in by it.
But honestly, it’s a really cool adventure-style game, and it’s packed with a lot of old-school memes, which hits the nostalgia hard for me.

I Wanna Clear the Easy Miku 2 is basically a sick Miku rock ballad turned into a bossfight. It’s a nice beginner-friendly avoidance fight and it’s just a lot of fun. I really like it.

I Wanna Follow It is a really nice “dreamy” game. The beginning has a few needle sections that are pretty challenging, but overall it stays very playable. And the ending has a beautiful bossfight — super chill vibe with great music. Just a lovely, cozy experience

For: WannaFest 22
Wannafest 22 is currently my #2 favorite fangame. It’s insanely creative, with such a great variety of games — it really feels like a retro game marathon across the whole I Wanna Be The Guy universe.
There are so many cool childhood elements in here, and I love how it actually includes the signature mechanics of each main protagonist. The fact that they even carry over the HUD from the respective games is just genius.
And the 3D sections? Honestly super surprising — I didn’t expect them to work this well, but the execution is really impressive. Awesome game. I always have a great time coming back to it.

For: I Wanna Be The Guy Remastered
I Wanna Be The Guy (Remastered) is basically the beginning of a huge, fantastic, and insanely creative community. Even though I personally started with I Wanna Be the Boshy, IWBTG is really the “deserved” beginner entry — the game that’s best for getting introduced to this whole world.

For: I Wanna Escape Into My Mind
I Wanna Escape Into My Mind is a really special fangame to me. The fact that it runs in 16:9 thanks to the Unity engine already makes it feel completely different, and it looks great right away.
I love the level design and all the characters, who are also insanely well animated. The overall difficulty feels solid, and for me the stages are often harder than the bosses. Still, the boss fights were a ton of fun. And the story is genuinely deep.
One thing that (like many others) sometimes bothers me is the music. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of real bangers in this game. But at times it feels like it’s just screaming into your ears. I can imagine that’s even intentional, since it fits the theme of trying to escape your own mind and the music is supposed to put you under pressure. But “just screaming” isn’t the same as a tense, nerve-grinding atmosphere. Maybe it works at first, but after a while it becomes more annoying than unsettling.

I Wanna Be the Boshy was my very first I Wanna Be The Guy fangame. I originally got inspired by watching the runner Witwix speedrun it at GDQ. Back then I didn’t even know I Wanna Be the Guy existed, and I was absolutely blown away: how can a game be that insanely hard, and how can someone clear it that fast?
So many moments had me going “WTF is happening?!” and that’s exactly what made me want to try it myself. But when I actually started playing… I didn’t even get past the first boss (Kirby). After what felt like 30 hours, I quit.
Fast forward five years: I started streaming on Twitch, gave it another shot, and finally beat it for the first time. And then I even ended up speedrunning it — which younger me would’ve thought was impossible.
