why does this game want me to do so many weird diagonals

i really like the last areas visuals and music, but every screen having an alternate path kinda made the game boring. i like alternate paths but in moderation

only stage i really liked was the beginning, the fire flower one is the one i dislike the least aside from the aforementioned first stage, and then everything else is pretty annoying. has some cool ideas but the gameplay is pretty lackluster at times (especially the moving spikes and factory stages)
