Decent I suppose. Detracting 0.5 points because there aren't enough death grips songs in the ost and the pollination stage is 15 times shorter than it should have been

I really enjoyed burnmind!
Having played freezemind first, I will kinda compare my experience here to my experience playing freezemind.
I thought the first 30 stages weren't as good as the ones in freezemind, with less memorable music and less variety in gimmicks (almost every area in freezemind had 3 or more gimmicks, here it is usually just one main gimmick). I also think the ideas / execution weren't as great (but still really good!). There definitly are some stand out areas that were incredible, the scribble dna one and the killing your inverted self areas being some of my favorites in both games and are really fun to play. The bosses were much more inconsistent quality wise, however they are significantly more diverse than the bosses in freezemind. Many of the bosses feel extremely different from one another, for example sinistar, uboa, and freddy all change up the gameplay in substantial ways to make them stand out from one another.
For the time machine section, I liked it SO MUCH more than the time machine section in freezemind (i did not enjoy the time machine section in freezemind). Being said though, the areas didn't stand out too much (i didn't know much about the games referenced though), they just were short and not that difficult, which meant I had fun with all of them.
I liked the final boss, nowhere near as much as the freezemind final boss however.
I highly recommend this game! I really liked all the areas, and it was really really fun to play!
Both this and freezemind are incredibly unique and fun experiences.

I've never fully clicked with Erik's stuff. It's one of those things where I can recognize the quality and appreciate it, but when I see the general reception of them I always feel a bit left out. It's like I'm unable to tap into the joy that I'm ready and waiting to feel, and Erik's games always land in that mental 7-8/10 limbo for me. Burnmind as a result was a game I avoided playing for several years because I just felt like it wouldn't be worth my time. There are other things I could experience that I would more for the same amount of time investment. Again, I don't say this to disparage his work, but to express my own disappointment at not being able to fully enjoy it.
Burnmind finally broke this sort of mental block I have with Erik's work. It shows so much dedication to keeping things fresh as often as possible, all while working under a unified aesthetic of surreal fangame bullshit. It broke through my mental block basically, and I'm so happy to have finally found the Erik game for me.
