I have found needle tech interesting for a long time, but strayed away for L games because of how unpleasant I found the gameplay. I've recently been feeling like giving them a chance so I picked up this game since it looked pretty doable. As I would soon find out, this is a joke game that uses the ancient Japan2 engine. I love games that are messed up and make you wonder how they even turned out this way. I don't know how I'd judge how much I enjoyed the gameplay itself, it was kinda annoying but decently satisfying to beat saves which I think is standard for L games. My favorite part was definitely figuring out how to do the saves because they are designed to abuse behaviors that are NOT standard engine behavior.

I'll detail them here:

-Bonking changes align??? If you bonk a block, while holding a direction it will move you slightly
-You can single jump a diamond with the right align
-If you collide with a spike and a wall at the same time you die. You can stand where a spike and block collide, but only with 0 vspeed. This applies horizontally and vertically and makes wallhugs pretty much useless lol
-You can save off a block, if you hold into block where the save is. I think it's probably the same issue as the collision
-Although you can save off a block, you cant save on the last pixels of it!
-v-align is saved, and required for some saves. Examples are save 5, where you need an align that is way harder to grab than usual because of the collision bugs, and the right v-align to just walk off. On save 18, you can only full jump through a corner if you have the right v- align!
-You can 1f over a minispike with no bhop (helpful in save 5 for the align grab)
-You can 5f over an upside down spike with no bhop (helpful for save 7)
-I think bhops don't exist. Every problem they usually solve just works with getting the right v-align

After writing that all out, it makes me think of how this game is kind of like a puzzle, but you get to get your mind into the inner workings of the engine and combine that with your standard engine knowledge to figure everything out. And on top of finding unusual behavior interesting, I find them funny as fuck.

a short but enjoyable game. unfortunately I can't give it a higher rating on account of it feeling unfinished and otherwise being very short. there's some fun 32px trigger needle with some clever fakeouts/traps that you likely won't expect. bosses are quite simple, you'll likely recognize them if you've played K2; they're the guys in the 2nd boss that sit at the sides and throw bouncing rocks. kinda weird seeing them not using these rocks at all and just using cherries like most other fangame bosses

recommended, you'll likely beat this in under 30 minutes

entirely miserable entrance fight with some of the worst balancing known to mankind. the curving code that is used in this game is the worst, most illogical, most braindead shit I've ever seen in my entire life. they randomly change speed and the way they're curving in such incomprehensibly stupid ways that they border on unreadability. the drop is where 95% of the difficulty lies, since the curving spam becomes so unbearably dumb and unreadable that you're just left hoping that nothing kills you. this essentially makes it so you repeatedly reach final and die. this will happen multiple times in a row and you'll just have to learn to deal with it. final is luck-based for two reasons: the bursts, which constrict your space to move way too much, allowing you to be walled by 1 cherry that curves the wrong way (granted they curve in the most utterly braindead way imaginable so expect this to happen more often than not). true final is nothing compared to the attacks before it and you likely won't die to it if you're semi-competent.

oh yeah and also the needle just exists, it's kinda lame and uninteresting. more importantly the music in it is pretty bad too

absolutely not recommended, very bad, poorly balanced and luck-based

This game feels like the perfect example of a maker that has great ambitions but lacks the motivation to finish the rest of their project, and once the project has been finished they didn't want to have a second look at how fun the gameplay is which results in a big drop in quality. To me the first time I noticed this was at floor 44, although some might say the FTFA section starting at floor 31 is where the experience for some people starts feeling sour. With exception of the FTFA floor I've mentioned before, the first half of the game is extremely well made and well thought of. The visuals compliment the needle well and the music is also pretty chill to listen to. 26-30 had the best visuals in my opinion.

When I got further and further into the game I began to annoy myself to small things that were barely or just not at all apparent in the earlier floors. Jumps that look like setups but aren't, random 1f or cancel jumps that shouldn't really be there but most importantly the lack of cohesion between the floors. I feel like the maker just tried to churn out the game as soon as possible by just throwing in random Jtool maps they had in their collection with no prior playtesting or balancing other than "this screen would fit that floor". This results in screens that feel very exhausting to play due to the huge swings in difficulty on every floor you beat, and when I decide to come back to start the next session I always felt disappointed because I know the next floor will usually be hard in a bad way. Also, a special shoutouts to floors 59 and 66 which have the most obvious skips in the entire game, where the former lets you skip a small part of the save and the latter lets you skip 95% of the floor which I didn't even notice because I thought that was where I had to go.

Now the reason why I ultimately decided to write this is because of the sheer disappointment I had while grinding floor 80. The first 15 minutes were very enjoyable to play and learn. That was until I got to the last screen, which was also the hardest and most precise part by far and feels entirely out of place for where its placed in the floor. It's a couple of random FTFA-type jumps stitched together which doesn't sound that bad, except that you only have one shot at it every 90 seconds into an attempt. This section also gets worse due to the smooth camera that makes timing your jumps twice as hard as it should be, especially the second and last jumps. I ended up dying there over 20 times before I finally got it, and this comes from someone that has played and made stuff in that genre somewhat often. Had that section been placed as the first or second screen, then I'd have safely called it my favorite floor in the entire game. Sadly the opposite of this is true, and when I got the clear it felt very unrewarding because I know this floor could have been much better if the maker decided to give one more shit about balancing it.

I can recommend the first half of the game unless you are bad at FTFA to which you should probably quit at floor 31, but if you can't stomache the rest of the floors after then I want to say quit this game in an instant. The ideas are there, but unfortunately the execution was not and the needle ends up falling very flat because of it.
