For: I wanna be the Salt
The platforming is at best alright, the visuals are crap even by 2015 standards, the secrets are hidden in the classic esoteric fangame way, and the bosses themselves are fairly simplistic. All of this would suggest this game would not hold up, but that's honestly not true. There's something special about salt, some hidden magic that makes this a joy to play through. I wouldn't say anything about this game is spectacular (although the true final boss is really quite good, as is most every boss), but it all gels into one cohesive, juicy product that leaves the player satisfied.
Each stage is rather short, also featuring a hidden stage and secret item per stage. Therefore, you'll be fighting two bosses per stage, totaling to 14 boss fights in the game. These fights are the gameplay highlight, most of them being quite fun to fight and with a nice bit of challenge to not leave you catatonic from boredom. Again, the platforming isn't anything to write home about, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The true final boss is, as you can imagine, the highlight of the game, being a rather long, rather fun, and rather challenging way to end the game. I personally beat it on my first try, so I can't speak to how difficult it really is, but I was at the very least surprised to have beaten it so quickly.
I wholeheartedly recommend this absolute classic, if you haven't played it already. This is a shining example of a classic fangame.
For: I wanna water a flower
The room in which you need to get to a place the arrow is pointing to you, you must wait for a block to appear. There is an invisible wall to be found in the room with the trigger that you can't seem to acces. The answer to the weird code thing that asks you "?" is 2.
I, uh... I don't really know what to make of this game. It feels both like an attempt at something and a joke in and of itself; I cannot tell if this is genuine effort or someone taking the piss.
Let's assume the former.
I Wanna Water a Flower is a puzzle/adventure game that would take less than ten minutes to beat from beginning to end provided you know the answers to the two puzzles, only one of which I'd really call an actual puzzle. There's a third bit one could call a puzzle, but that's so barely within the definition of puzzle that it's not worth counting it. Nonetheless, I was rather surprised upon opening the game to find some rather good visuals, though the save/load screen also, peculiarly enough, had a few shit brown blocks strewn about as well. This, more or less, gives you an idea of the confusing nature of the game.
The platforming is fairly generic, though not irritating at the very least. The real star of the show here is the baffling nature of the game itself. A weirdly creepy mood pervades the game, making you think there's more here than it seems. The game feels like the preamble to something greater, but once you solve (or brute force) the last puzzle, it sort of just ends, though the ending is suitably confusing as well. My only real complaint is that the puzzles are bad, though I think they fit into the nature of the game. The last puzzle, however, I have no idea how you're supposed to get to the answer, I just brute forced it and got lucky that the answer was simplistic.
I enjoyed this experience, for one reason or another, though I may be in the minority there. I'd like a more serious attempt at a game, since this was rather alluring to me. I think something more can be done here.
For: I Wanna be the Matryoshka Special Edition
This is a modified version of I Wanna be the Matryoshka, a Rukito-like by Dono with bosses from KittyGame. I liked that game a fair bit, but always found it to be rather problematic in several different areas. This game sets out to improve on the original by making it overall easier and removing all the bosses and changing the final boss. Ultimately, I think this was a pretty successful upgrade!
There are still some irritating jumps, and some of the nerfs actually kill interesting saves at times, but for the most part this was a far smoother experience. Every stage has something offer and felt enjoyable to play through, though the final stage had most of the problem saves (this was the same in the original as well, though it's still better here).
I personally didn't have much issue with most of the bosses from Matryoshka, but I don't necessarily mind their extrication. Nonetheless, the final boss is actually pretty good, being a Destination-like. It's a bit simplistic and pretty easy, but I still had a fun time beating it.
Overall, this is easily recommended for lovers of the Rukito-like genre or people that just want themselves a good needle game with light gimmicks.
For: Alphazetica
Alphazetica is a floor-game, essentially, with you traveling through the alphabet rather than some arbitrarily chosen number like 50, 100, or what have you. There are five different sections of the game, all of which are equally spectacular. I am unsure of who made what, but it matters not. Every maker deserves equivalent praise, everyone is in top form here. From beginning to end, I was so wholly satisfied with what I was playing that I couldn't help but finish the game in one sitting. Each screen is impeccably made, the flow from beginning to end is transcendental, the music choices splendiferous. There is not an ounce of a fifth of even a suggestion of a flaw in this game, and to say as much about a collab game is something I've never had the opportunity to say, and I would not be surprised if that opportunity never came again.
The gameplay itself is more or less all gimmick needle, and though most of the gimmicks in play should be familiar to nearly all fangame players, they're all utilized in such fashions that it feels intrinsic, like these gimmicks were designed way back when purely so they could eventually be put to use here. The more novel gimmicks, all of which are found in the final level, are of course brilliant. I'd pick favorites, but there's no point in that as they're all just as good as each other.
This is a legendary game, one that makes me happy to be apart of this community. Chatran, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being the catalyst for this. And I thank the rest of you makers as well for lending your masterful skills to Alphazetica.
If you're not already playing this game, get to it!
For: Stars
This took me less than ten minutes to beat, not because I'm a great player, but because it's not that hard.
This is a basic needle game made up of 16 screens. There's not a single gimmick in the game, unless you consider platforms a gimmick.
Knowing that, how could I ever rate the game this highly? Well, because it's that good!
There's a surprising amount of creativity on display despite being a mere microcosm of gameplay, mainly on a jump by jump basis. There's nothing outrageous, but given the difficulty of the game, I'm just thankful it's as exciting as it is. The save balance is totally screwed, each screen probably being easy enough that just one save would be decent balance, but that doesn't bother me much.
My other issue is that it's too short, that being my biggest gripe. Realistically, though, that doesn't impact my enjoyment of the game. It just means that I want a bigger game out of this creator. I think if they stepped beyond the boundaries of a basic needle game, they could make something really fun and enjoyable. They've already done so here, why not put their energies into something a little meatier?
Nonetheless, this is a great little experience, one I'd personally recommend heavily.
