For: Fall th(re)e Stool
The final third game in the Fall the stool series, made several years after first 2 games were made. This time the title is very clever, referencing both to the original game's title and to the fact that this is the third game.
According to the readme of the game Stonk (the original author of the series) requested someone under the nickname StoolFaller to make another installment in these series. Not sure if it is true, but that is what it states.
The game is made on GMS1 engine instead of GM8, and you can see that the game is quite different from other 2 games.
The game has actual platforming, using Needle along with different size Spikes, Jump Refreshers, Killer Blocks and Vines. Also kid is standing Sideways, which is a clever reference to the fact that kid has broken both legs. I did not get that immediately, but that is quite funny.
In my opinion, while this game is still pretty simple, it is a bit harder than what is the average.
You need to do quite non-standard jumps, using jump refreshers and vines, even if saves are quite short.
If I had to guess, I think 3rd and 4th saves are the hardest in this game. Although if you play, I recommend not using vines for the 4th save. I have no clues why there is a vine. It makes things harder.
4th save is also special because it has a trap, where you see another stool. You cannot jump over it before landing (I think?), but you need to kind of go off from it and jump in the same time (or something like that). Otherwise the kid is gonna start falling down and it will never die. That was quite clever, considering in all games kid was breaking bones, but here it is impossible.
The last save is the easiest one, and is basically a filler one. You need to climb up, and then kid is gonna very slowly fall down. The music is different here than in all other games (as well as the main room having a song at all). It kind of fits better, I think. Also if you restart during cutscene, the music will continue, just like in the original games.
The cutscene is kind of long, and has double twist. You get spring trap, that will bounce the kid up, and the music is gonna be inverted. After that on the top there is another trap, that will make the kid fall down. This makes an infinite loop, and when going down you will see a classic a bit epileptic scene of 'FU' mid-way of falling down the 2nd time. Then the game closes down.
This game was kind of weird one for me. The gameplay was OK, even if it was a bit inconvenient, in my opinion. The trap is funny, the final cutscene is odd but is original enough.
The weird thing is that the whole gameplay felt a bit filler, although it is still quite easy, so I guess there is that. Maybe some more traps would have fit better to the vibe.
I think 'FU' moment could have been implemented in a more creative way. Now it is just out of nowhere. The kid does not break anything, so like what is the point? The story is that kid just gets in an infinite loop? But why was there a trap with an identical idea? Odd.
This game is definitely a huge improvement, and I did like several things here. Aesthetics kind of fit better than in other games, and having any gameplay was quite refreshing.
However, the game is still lacking and having very little to offer to the player. The twists are a bit funny but that is it. Gameplay is still mediocre, not unfun, but also not necessarily fun.
Meh.
Would not recommend, realistically.
For: I Wanna Fall The S2l
The concept is identical, except this time there is slightly more platforming and more time waste. The stool is located on the upper part of the screen, and you need to climb several platforms to get up there. It is pretty easy, but is by 1 difficulty point higher than the original game.
When you get on the top, click 'Shift', and it will trigger the cutscene. This time camera will very awkwardly slide to the kid, and then you will see how slowly kid falls down to the ground.
The music is the same, the only difference is that you will hear more than the last time, because the cutscene is very, very slow.
After that you will get a drawing of kid breaking his leg once again, and the text that says that the other leg got broken. And then you once again have slightly epileptic screen saying 'FU'.
Refer to my review for the first game. There is really not much to say. This is just the same game, but more annoying. The only reason I am giving the same rating is because the camera zoom in is actually a bit funny.
But other than that, I am still not sure why this game was made. And why was there a need for a sequel? This was so unnecessary. The original game was already not funny, and the sequel does not feel justified in any way.
As I have said previously: 'I am definitely not the target audience for this game.'
Would not recommend.
For: I Wanna Fall The Stool
I am not 100% familiar with the story behind this game, but from what I know, it is referencing how Denferok fall off his stool.
The game itself has a loading screen, and a screen that has a stool in the middle of the screen. If you go outside the screen, you die.
You can get on the level of the stool. But your goal is to get above the image of the stool and then to press jump key. It will trigger the cutscene. If you press 'R', while watching cutscene, the music will continue, but you will get back to the room.
The cutscene is very slow, with some ... overly dramatic music, I guess? The kid just falls down from the last position where you stayed.
Then you get zoom out and see that kid has broken his bone(s), and then some slight epilepsy with a weirdly drawn image and text basically saying 'FU', I guess. And then the game just closes down.
'Why?' is the question that I have. Why would you make such 'meme', why would you make such long and boring cutscene, why would you make slightly epileptic ending, and why does it say 'FU' ?
I do not know the full context, on how critically they fell down, but in any case, this game is not funny, and is honestly kind of immature.
But even if you do not know anything about behind scenes stuff, this game really does not have anything. The cutscene is boring, and could have been much better. It feels extremely lazy and uninspired.
I am definitely not the target audience for this game. I really do not get why this game exists.
Would not recommend.
For: I Don't Wanna Be The TAS
Quite old Chinese game (.exe shows 15/09/2013 date), which was originally distributed on Chinese websites, all links of which are most likely expired at this point. You can find game's backup on Archive, and as far I know there are no viruses if you download that way.
That being said, this is a very short unfinished game (literally says, beta), that has 7 screens taken from 'I wanna be the TAS'. The idea is that you have an introductory screen, where you go with conveyors to the portal (with some heart-pounding soundtrack), then you go to the main 6 screens. 2 of them are nerfed using mini-spikes and fake traps, that do not kill you, alongside additional secret blocks as far as I can tell. Then you have 2 yellow screens, where every spike is a block, so you cannot die. And then there are 2 blue screens where every spike and fruit disappears as soon as you touch them. The disappearance is followed by a loud sound effect, so on the last screen you might have a blast in the ears if you destroy too many in a row.
Zorgo's screenshot shows just one save on screen, but if you use Medium mode, you will see that there are more, so the difficulty is even lower. Weirdly enough, there are actually quite a lot of difficulty settings, including 'Lunatic' and 'Easy' mode that says 'Caution : Player is Girl!' (you just have a bow and more saves, basically). Lunatic mode is also weird, because it is basically like Impossible but you have a save in the beginning of the 1st real screen. I mean, it is hard to die on the introductory screen, so I do not know why would you need 'Impossible' mode, and also how can you know the differences beforehand?
The music resets every new screen or upon the death. It is pretty cool song, but it is a bit annoying that it restarts in a such way.
Title screen says 'Fake TAS', which is funny, and also fits perfectly to the game.
When you beat the game, you get to the demo blocks.
That is basically it.
It is pretty interesting seeing the fake traps, and a bit creative way to show that nothing kills you. MikuStar263's review mentions that you have godmode, but I would not necessarily call it like that. It is more like that spikes become blocks and then spikes and fruits are allergic to the kid lol.
This is not a disaster of a game. But it also does not have much going on.
I did not know that '83' has made any games, so it was something new to me.
Anyway, would not recommend.
For: I wanna you know that
- But I dare not say
- I'm afraid I said
- I will die
- I'm not afraid of death
- I'm afraid I'm dead
- There will never be anyone like me again
- Love you
What a powerful cutscene! Thank you Google Translate for helping me to understand this important message!
Oh, boy, I cannot wait to play the game!!!
Wait...
What do you mean 'thanks for playing' ???
===================================================================================================
This is basically 'I wanna Play the Game' but with a cutscene with a random placement of Chinese text. Also music disappears as soon as you press F2 (and you also might experience GM error). Also you can skip the intro. You kind of break immersion this way, so why is it even an option? Maybe would igive higher rating if it was made better.
Why does this even exist, again?
Would not recommend.
