Yoyo has outdone himself yet again, with another great release in the genre he performs best in — adventure. Sugar is unlike any other Yoyo game, in the sense that his style is greatly overhauled to the point where it’s practically unrecognizable (in a good sense) compared to his early style. this is where I raise an eyebrow at the imposed claim that this is a Salt remake/reimagination. I personally hardly find any similarities between the two. the Venn diagram of Salt and Sugar barely crosses over due to how large the time gap is (not to mention how big the ‘gamemaking prowess’ gap is)
Yoyo is to this day one of my favorite makers for one reason and one reason only — he keeps it simple. no bullshit, just the rawest form of adventure. stage, secret, boss, stage, secret, boss, final stage, final boss, extra stage, extra boss. this time there’s a lack of extra, but it doesn’t matter since the base game already has a bunch of content anyway. to prove this game’s quality, I’ll share a part of my personal experience with the game. I had to clear every stage in the game twice to find all the secrets since I had missed them in my initial runthrough. however, this wasn’t the first time I had to do this in a Yoyo game. I had the same issue in Salt, where it felt boring and drawn-out. in stark contrast to Salt, reclearing stages in this game felt just as, if not somehow more fun than the first time. there’s simply a lot more to do in this game when compared to its predecessors. only Time Characters really compares to Sugar in terms of content. Time Characters is a bit of an old game and sticks to super basic platforming with a few gimmicks thrown in. Sugar isn’t much different, but feels more ‘complete’ as a game. the best way to fully understand what I’m talking about is to just play the game and see for yourself. the bosses are notably much harder here than in any other Yoyo adventure game. of course, it’s still no match for some of Yoyo’s avoidances. I would be shitting myself if the Gel monster appeared as one of the bosses in an adventure game

platform-based needle game with a few interesting saves. it explores essentially every possible avenue of how to use platforms within the confines of non-gimmick needle. it has a few saves that you might sigh when looking at — namely the double diamonds that are found within this game. they aren’t that hard since the saves are so short, but they are quite the thing to put in a <60 difficulty game. the tileset is okay, I kinda like it. needle mostly doesn’t look messy, secondly however I can’t recall if there is music or not. not bad overall

rare example of an avoidance being truly 100% pattern and not having a single RNG-based element whatsoever. on top of that, it’s made by tomo, who’s known for his insane RNG avoidances that typically delve into the realm of luck. strangely enough, it’s quite fun and works quite well. the song is very good, the attacks flow fairly well and transition into one another pretty good and the overall experience isn’t too bad. it’s very learny and doesn’t have a lot of standing still — as in, it’s nothing like Common World Domination where there are also a ton of patterns but you hardly do anything in them. there’s a few standout hard ones: the bursts at the very beginning of the first chorus and final. final is very difficult to learn since it’s one of the less intuitive and easy-to-understand patterns. it involves pacing and timing unlike any other pattern in the fight. I’m not a fan of this whole ‘hardest pattern has to be at the end’ business — but hey, at least that isn’t RNG, otherwise this game would be really bad. the patterns don’t really look too nice, most of them work by the principle of “here’s a bunch of random bursts and shit, figure out how to dodge it lol”. in my eyes, this isn’t a good way to make pattern, but it can work. at least it isn’t an avoidance where half the attacks consist of seeded RNG that the maker overratedly calls ‘pattern’
not a bad game, but can get a bit tedious if you’re impatient. it isn’t very easy to learn at all, even when looking at a strat video. tomo could’ve done a lot worse with this, yet he didn’t. this is rather commendable

it’s important to note my personal enjoyment of this game won’t have too big of an effect on the quality rating I’ve given it. this is important since I had a nightmare of a time with this game, dying to the last couple of attacks a combined total of 30+ times. be it due to poor RNG, simply not wanting to play the avoidance leading to bad performance, or me just being bad, I couldn’t stand this avoidance for the final 10-20 minutes of my playtime. it’s far from the hardest game I’ve cleared, yet it always seems like I struggle on these kinds of games. I’m going to sound a little bit schizophrenic for a moment, but I firmly believe that Miku avoidances with this fog background in particular are the fangame equivalent of being under a ladder — it gives you the same amount of unluck. I keep suffering and having horrible times with games that have this exact background; prime example being Flower of Sorrow, a game I found unbelievably agonizing due to my poor luck with the game
either way, this game at it’s core is just a simple RNG-based Miku avoidance with legitimately only one pattern. it’s right at the beginning and isn’t very hard to learn. everything up to the last 3 or 4 attacks is quite simple and readable. the last attacks are very diffcult, in particular prefinal curving which I found surprisingly hard. final is annoying and walls you quite often due to bad bounces being very prevalent. I didn’t really enjoy this game and I dislike the song as well. it simply doesn’t fit what is essentially a barrage
recommended, you’ll probably have a better time with it than I did

unfinished needle game by Shinobu with a few interesting vstring jumps to be found. there isn’t a lot of note other than a somewhat displeasing tileset and a lack of content due to it being unfinished. no large difficulty spikes or overly strange jumps, it’s fairly plain when it comes to needle design. despite Triton being a moon of Neptune, it doesn’t seem to be too reminiscent of other Solar System games
